Jordan Spieth is looking for redemption this week when the PGA Tour’s 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am kicks off Thursday. The 2017 Pebble Beach champion and three-time major winner took the lead last year heading into 15th on Sunday, but Tom Hogg passed him to win at 19-under. Both are scheduled to be part of the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am field that also includes 2022 US Open champions Matt Wispatrick and Victor Hofland, among others. Celebrities like actor Bill Murray, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, and country music artist Eric Church will also be in attendance for the three-turn tryout. Each player will encounter Monterey Peninsula and Spyglass Hill once, and two rounds will be played on the popular Pebble Beach layout.

McDonald is taking a measured approach to his direct selections and has a profitable 2022-23 season. He shot to the Farmers Insurance Open last week, backing Max Homa (25-1) as his top pick. The expert also missed a massive 130-1 score at the Sony Open when Hayden Buckley finished second. He shot 25-1 at the Houston Open, leading Tony Finau to a 25-1 win.

Shockingly, MacDonald wants nothing to do with Spieth this week, as the 2022 summer runner-up fades despite his track history. Speith has finished with fewer than 22 finishes in 10 Pro-Am appearances, which has put him in the top 10 in three consecutive years. But he hasn’t cracked the top 10 yet this season, and his short game hasn’t indicated he’ll make it this time. The 29-year-old’s last round was a 75 that took him from top spot to missing the cut at the Sony Open in the space of 24 hours. Spieth ranks 147th in scoring average and is 211th in putouts.
Meanwhile, MacDonald knows Hovland is coming from 25th in a row or better. This includes his second consecutive win in the Unofficial Hero World Challenge in December. The Norwegian is 52-under-par over his four official matches and ranks 20th on tour in scoring average. The 25-year-old also did well in limited exposure to Pebble Beach. He tied for 12th at the 2019 US Open and was a T-38 in 2020’s only time playing Pro-Am. He entered the final round in the top 15 but shot 77. He’s a much more experienced player now.
