Los Altos, California – (work wire) –KinaraDevelopers of artificial intelligence processors for advanced computing applications today announced their collaboration with NXP Semiconductor, the global leader in secure communication solutions for embedded applications. Through this collaboration, customers of NXP’s portfolio of semiconductor AI-enabled products will have the option to expand their AI acceleration needs by utilizing the Kinara Ara-1 Edge AI processor for high-performance inference using deep learning models. Working together, the two companies have tightly combined the computer vision capabilities of the NXP i.MX application processors with the improved performance and power inference of the Kinara Ara-1 AI processor to deliver computer vision analytics for a range of applications that include smart retail, smart cities and industrialization.
Kinara’s patented Edge AI processor, the Ara-1, delivers a leading combination of performance, power, and price for compact cameras and high-end servers. Kinara AI complements its processing technology with a comprehensive and powerful suite of development tools that allow its customers to easily transform their neural network models into highly optimized computational flows ready for deployment on the Ara-1 chip.
“Smart vision processing is an explosive market and a natural fit for machine learning. But vision systems are getting more complex, with larger and larger sensors, and model sizes are growing. To keep pace with these trends, it requires dedicated AI accelerators that can handle,” said Kevin Crewell, Principal Analyst at Research TIRIAS, load processing efficiently – whether in power or silicon. The best modular approach to vision systems is to combine an embedded processor with an energy-efficient AI accelerator, such as the combination from NXP’s i.MX family of embedded application processors and the Kinara AI accelerator.”
NXP’s AI processing solutions include microcontrollers (MCUs), the i.MX RT series of crossover MCUs and i.MX application processor families, which represent a variety of multi-core solutions for multimedia and display applications. The NXP portfolio covers a very large portion of the AI processing needs on-premises, and for any use case that requires higher AI performance due to increases in frame rates, image resolution and number of sensors, the demand can be met by integrating NXP processors with the Kinara Ara-1 to deliver a scalable level-wide solution. The system where customers can scale and split AI between the NXP and the Ara-1, while maintaining a common application program running on NXP processors.
“Our processing solutions and AI software stacks enable a very wide range of AI performance requirements — a necessity given our extremely broad customer base,” said Joe Yu, Vice President and General Manager, IoT Edge Processing, NXP Semiconductors. “By working with Kinara to help meet our customers’ demands with the highest levels of cutting-edge AI processing, we will deliver high-performance AI in smart retail, smart city and industrial markets.”
“We see two general trends with Edge AI customers. One trend is a shift towards a Kinara solution that significantly reduces the cost and power of their existing platforms that use traditional GPUs to accelerate AI. The other trend is to replace Edge AI accelerators from well-known brands with Kinara’s Ara-1 allowing the customer to improve performance at least 4 times at the same or better price.”Our collaboration with NXP will allow us to deliver highly compelling system-wide solutions that include commercial-grade Linux and driver support that complements our extensive heuristics pipeline.”
