Over 1,000 children’s books with favorites from Dr. Seuss, Llama Llama, and more have been given to Maui Children’s Economic Opportunity Head Start as a recipient of the Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive.
There were cardboard, paper, and picture books in the boxes provided to MEO earlier in December, according to a press release, and customers at the Maui Marketplace bookstore in Kahului bought children’s books for the drive.
About 150 children in the Head Start on Maui and Molokai program have received several titles with books left to hand out at parent meetings, said Debbie Amaral, MEO Early Childhood Director.
Head Start offers free preschool to low-income families on Maui and Molokai. Children who are homeless, in foster care and part of families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are given priority.
“The gift of books, which some of our families cannot afford, can leave an imprint on a child for life,” MEO CEO Debbie Kabebe said in a press release on Sunday. Don’t we all have fond memories of our favorite childhood books? The ugly duckling” to me “Giving Tree.
“Many thanks to our donors and Barnes & Noble for selecting MEO Head Start as a Holiday Book Drive beneficiary. MEO and the Head Start Program families are very grateful,” Cabebe added.
Head Start is the first program established by MEO in 57 years and funded to serve 219 children. For more information about MEO Head Start, call (808) 249-2988.
