MONTREAL (AP) — Cole Cofield scored twice on a power play as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Nashville Predators 4-3 Thursday night after honoring former defenseman BK Subban at a pregame ceremony.
Kirby Dash added a goal and an assist for Montreal, Jake Evans also scored and Jonathan Drouin made three assists. Samuel Montembolt stopped 39 shots.
Nino Niedreiter, Philipp Forsberg and Jozo Parsinen scored for Nashville. Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves in his NHL debut.
Midway through the second period, Nick Suzuki crossed Cofield for a goal that gave Montreal a 3-2 lead. Coffield struck again at 6:15 of the third, scoring on a run off a pass by Dach.
The Predators pulled Askrov off with less than three minutes left in the game, and Parsenin scored with 1:29 on a slap shot.
Saban tribute
Subban played his first seasons in the NHL with the Canadiens, winning the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman in 2012-13, and also played for the Predators and New Jersey.
He addressed the crowd and was greeted with a standing ovation.
“It’s always an emotional time and the respect is overwhelming,” said Sabban, who retired after last season. “Everyone wants to be respected but when that’s the case, you don’t really know how to deal with it. I just tried to take it in stride and be grateful for the fact that I played here.”
