What is your favorite social network: Instagram, TikTok or Facebook? If some people rush to check social media as soon as they wake up, others spend all night on these platforms. A recent study looked at the time people spent on them. So which countries are most addicted to the internet and social media? Are women or men more present on these platforms? And what are the reasons that keep us online for so long?

You just have to take public transportation to see everyone’s eyes glued to their smartphone. We are social and Hootsuite I looked at the time spent online and, more precisely, on social networks around the world in a recent report from July 2022.

Of the 7.98 billion people in the world, according to the latest United Nations figures, the study counted 5 billion users connected to the Internet, or 63%, of whom 92.4% use their phones to connect to the Internet. However, this number is lower than it was in 2021. On average, an Internet user spends 6 hours and 53 minutes on the Internet per day! As surprising as this may sound, it is still three minutes short of the same period in 2021, according to the study.

The mobile phone remains the most used device for accessing the Internet, ahead of computers, with 68% of users choosing it. Nigeria is the country where most internet users use their phones to browse the web (98.4% of 16-64 year olds). Elsewhere, that number is no less than 83%, with Denmark being the last country on the list with 83.2%.

But what do these netizens do online? According to the study, the most used types of websites and applications on the Internet are chat and messaging services, for 95.7% of users, social networks Follow closely with 95.2%. YouTube is the most visited website, according to Semrush’s ranking in February 2022, ahead of Google and Facebook. Staying in touch with friends and family is the second most common reason for using the Internet, for 54.7% of 16-64 year olds. But at the top of the list comes “find information”, a rather vague reason, which was chosen by 60.2% of respondents.

This is more than double the time spent by Internet users in Japan, who stay connected for 4 hours and 3 minutes per day, which is lower than the global average of 6 hours and 53 minutes. Malaysia comes in at sixth place with an impressive time of 9 hours 4 minutes per day, while Singapore doesn’t even beat the top ten – it is in 14th place with a time of 7 hours and 50 minutes.

Users in the US are above average, spending 7 hours and 11 minutes online, even though the country does not rank in the top ten list.

Nigeria tops the ranking of countries with the most social media addiction

The study counted 4.65 billion users on social networks, an increase of 326 million over the same period in 2021. These users represent 93.1% of the world’s Internet users and 58.7% of the total population. Men are the most popular on social networks (54.2%). Meanwhile, 75.1% of social network users are over 13 years old.

On average, Internet users spend 2 hours 29 minutes on social networks around the world. That’s 7 minutes more than the previous year. According to the report, Generation Z spends an average of 4.5 hours per day on social networks, making it their preferred platform for accessing entertainment, news, shopping and messaging.

Nigeria leads the rankings with 4 hours, 49 minutes spent on social networks every day, followed by the Philippines. Once again, surprisingly, Japan ranks last in the ranking of countries that spend the most time on social networks. Japanese aged 16-64 spend an average of 50 minutes on social platforms each day, behind South Korea (1 hour 13 minutes) and the Netherlands (1 hour 25 minutes). France 41 hours 46 minutes. The USA is at 25 with 2 hours and 17 minutes, and the UK is at 35 with 1 hour and 56 minutes. All fall below the world average.

Generation Z – those between the ages of 16 and 24 – are the most addicted to social networks, especially women. They spend an average of 3 hours and 11 minutes online, compared to 2 hours and 40 minutes for men. Unsurprisingly, people between the ages of 55 and 64 are the least keen on social platforms. Women spend 1 hour and 43 minutes of their time on these sites, compared to 1 hour and 26 minutes for men. Regardless of age, women remain the most present on social networks, in terms of time.

The most popular social media platforms

The use of social networks remains useful above all for keeping in touch with family and friends, for 47.5% of users aged 16-24. Meanwhile, 36.6% use social platforms to fill their spare time. About 34.8% log on to read news stories, while 31% use networks to search for articles or videos.

Note that social network users also turn to these apps for shopping: 27.6% are looking for inspiration for activities or purchases, and 26.6% focus on finding products to buy.

Not surprisingly, Facebook remains the most used platform by internet users, followed by YouTube and WhatsApp, ahead of Instagram, WeChat, TikTok, Messenger and Douyin. Snapchat is only ranked ninth, while Twitter does not even occupy the top ten.

Users do not use only one social network. On average, 7.4 platforms are used per month worldwide. India is the country with the most social platforms used per capita, with an average of 8.7 compared to 3.7 in Japan.

If Facebook remains the most used platform, especially thanks to the astronomical number of its users, 16.6% of 16-24 year olds say they prefer WhatsApp over Facebook and Instagram (14.9%). TikTok was chosen with only 4.6%, ahead of Twitter (3.2%). Discord is the last platform, and surprisingly, Snapchat is the last but two with only 1.3% of preferences.

WhatsApp is the preferred platform for 55-64 year olds (20.9%), Facebook is more popular between 35-44 years old (16.5%) while Instagram is more popular among younger generations – 24.2% between 16-24 and 18% For ages 25 to 34 years old.

For users, each platform is used for different reasons. Facebook is mostly used for messaging friends and family with 71.1%. Users turn to TikTok (77.4%) and Reddit (37.8%) to enjoy and search for entertaining content. Unsurprisingly, Instagram (69.9%) and Snapchat (40.3%) are the ideal platforms for posting/sharing photos and videos.
