WNBA: Lynx Offseason Update: McBride, Shepard, and the Carleton All Shine

Happy New Year, basketball fans!

Welcome back to a new week in the Minnesota Lynx Offseason Update as the calendar year now flips from 2022 to 2023 and the start of the new year in the WNBA is just a few months away.

As we wait for some of the unofficial events to take place, such as free agency now underway, the upcoming draft in April and any potential moves via trade the remainder of the offseason, a few Lynx players continue to hone their skills overseas to prepare for the upcoming season in the WNBA.

In the Lynx Offseason Update v3In this article, we update you on Kayla McBride, Jessica Shepard and Bridget Carleton and how this trio of Lynx perform for their teams in Turkey, Italy and Spain.

Over the past week, McBride has continued to shine in Turkey building on her strong run thus far, while Shepherd and Carlton got back into action after some time off in December.

Let’s take a look at the Lynx’s performance outdoors in Offseason Update V4.

Kayla McBride

Fenerbahçe – Euroleague – Istanbul, Turkey

McBride continues to be the Lynx’s best performer off the season, putting in another solid showing in Turkey with Fenerbahçe as we’ve seen in previous seasons.

Over the past week since the last update, a Player of the Month of the Turkish Basketball Federation For the month of November, I played in one match between Turkey and KBSL on December 30 against OGM Ormanspor. She recorded an overall performance of 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in 33 minutes during the 100-72 victory. This 25-point game was McBride’s fourth in the offseason in the Turkey-KBSL game, also matching a season-high in rebounds in a win.

So far this season, McBride has averaged 21.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1 steal over 29.7 minutes in 11 Turkey-KBSL games. She also averaged 17.9 points, three rebounds, 2.7 assists and one steal in 36 minutes over seven Euroleague games this offseason.

Jessica Shepherd

Umana Reyer Venezia – Italy Serie A1 / EuroCup – Venice, Italy

Shepherd returned to the court for the first time since December 4, helping Umana Reyer Venezia to a 102-71 victory over Faenza on December 30 in the Italian Championship of Serie A1. In that game, Shepherd returned to her double-double form and recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 23 minutes.

The double performance on 30 December was Sheppard’s fifth in the offseason, four of which came in the Italy-Serie A1 match and the other in the European Cup. She has scored a double-double in three of her last four Italy appearances in Serie A.

This off-season, Shepard averaged 19.4 points, eight rebounds and 1.5 assists in 25.1 minutes over 11 Italy A1 Series contests. She averaged 15.5 points, eight rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23.3 minutes in four EuroCup matches this year.


Minnesota Lynx vs Los Angeles Sparks

Bridget Carlton

Perfumerías Avenida – EuroLeague – Salamanca, Spain

Like Shepard, Carlton scored her first event since pre-holiday last week, appearing in two Spain-LF Endesa competitions for Perfumerías Avenida on Dec. 28 and Dec. 30.

In those two games, Carlton contributed a pair of balanced games while finishing two points shy of surpassing the double-digit scoring mark in both games. In an 81-42 win over Tenerife on December 28, Carlton recorded eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal in 20 minutes. In a 70-63 loss to Cade La Su on December 30, she again scored eight points with three steals, two rebounds, one assist and one block in 27 minutes.

So far this offseason, Carlton has averaged seven points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and one assist in 23.5 minutes in four Spain-LF Endesa contests, while he has averaged 13.5 points, two rebounds and one assist in 22.5 minutes over two games in the European Cup.
